World Psoriasis Day 2025: Psoriatic Disease and Comorbidities Explained

Each year, the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) leads the global World Psoriasis Day campaign, bringing together organizations, clinicians, and patient advocates to raise awareness of the impact of psoriatic disease. In partnership with IFPA, the International Psoriasis Council (IPC) joined the 2025 campaign to highlight this year’s theme, Psoriatic Disease and Comorbidities: Understanding the Domino Effect.

Psoriasis is more than a skin disease; it’s a systemic inflammatory condition that can trigger a chain of related health issues, including psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and mental health challenges. This month, IPC’s campaign examined these interconnected comorbidities through clinical perspectives, educational resources, and expert commentary to support a more holistic approach to patient care.

A Month of Focused Education
Each week, IPC spotlighted one of the major comorbidities that impact people living with psoriatic disease:

  • Psoriatic Arthritis: Highlighting research that shows how early intervention can reduce joint damage and improve long-term outcomes.
  • Cardiovascular Risk: Exploring the link between systemic inflammation and heart health, and how biologic therapies may benefit both skin and cardiovascular outcomes.
  • Metabolic Health and Obesity: Reviewing new data on how weight-loss interventions, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, may improve psoriasis severity and treatment response.
  • Mental Health: Addressing the psychological burden of psoriasis and the importance of multidisciplinary care that includes mental-health screening and support.

Collaboration and Global Dialogue
IPC also partnered with Global Dermatology, the Skin Inflammation & Psoriasis Network (SPIN), the Tunisian Society of Dermatology and Venereology (STDV), and the African Society of Dermatology and Venerology (ASDV) to host an international World Psoriasis Day webinar featuring experts and advocates who shared the latest science, discussed equity in care, and emphasized the need for collaborative management across specialties.

Continuing the Conversation
While World Psoriasis Day occurs once a year, IPC’s commitment to advancing education on comorbidities continues year-round. This week, IPC also announced the formation of a new Comorbidities Working Group, launching in 2026, which will focus on advancing research and clinical understanding of the many health conditions associated with psoriatic disease.

Clinicians can further their learning through IPC’s Comorbidity Resource Collection, which includes expert-authored articles, commentaries, and case presentations dedicated to improving understanding of the full impact of psoriatic disease.

First-Line Biologics in Psoriasis: Evidence from the BADBIR Cohort Study

In this IPC commentary, Matias Maskin examines evidence from the BADBIR registry demonstrating that first-line biologic therapy in moderate to severe psoriasis leads to faster skin clearance, improved quality of life, and a lower risk of comorbidities. The analysis challenges traditional step-up approaches and supports earlier, patient-centered treatment strategies.
