Professor Matthias Augustin is a German physician, scientist, and university lecturer at Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Center. Professor Augustin studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg and medicine at the Universities of Hamburg, Milan, Freiburg, Basel, and Boston. After further training in dermatology and venereology, he became a Senior Physician and Deputy Director of the Department of Dermatology. In 2004, Professor Augustin was appointed University Professor of Health Economics and Quality of Life Research at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. In 2010, he established and became the Director of the Institute for Health Services Research in Dermatology and the Nursing Professions (IVDP) at UKE. Since 2011, Professor Augustin has been a founding member of the Hamburg Institute for Health Economics (HCHE), the largest Center for Health Economics in Germany. At the Hamburg Institute, Professor Augustin integrates clinical research, health services research, and health economics with clinical practice. He is the Director of several patient registries, including the German National Psoriasis Registry PsoBest. His main areas of clinical expertise are psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and other chronic inflammatory skin diseases, chronic wounds, and vascular diseases. Further research areas include health geographics and urban development. Professor Augustin is the editor or author of over 60 medical books and has authored approximately 850 scientific articles. He is a Senior Consultant to the German Ministry of Health, to several Statutory health insurance companies, and to a large number of companies in the health sector. He has been an expert to the German National Parliament (Bundestag), and he is the spokesman of the German Society for Dermatology to the German Federal Joint Committee (GBA) and to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Medicine (IQWiG).
