Professor Andrew Finlay graduated in 1972 from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London (where Fleming discovered penicillin). He has trained in London, Miami, and Cardiff, and was appointed consultant dermatologist in Glasgow in 1982. Moving back to Cardiff in 1987, he became Professor of Dermatology at Cardiff University from 1999 to 2009. He was President of the British Association of Dermatologists from 2000 to 2001 and appointed CBE in 2010. He pioneered the development of Quality of Life measures in dermatology, co-authoring the DLQI, CDLQI, FDLQI, CADI, and the partner/family measures FDLQI and FROM-16, that can be used across all specialties. He created the distance-learning Diploma in Practical Dermatology, which more than 200 general practitioners take annually. He was co-founder and editor of the Journal of Dermatological Treatment, has published more than 440 articles, and co-edited the 2022 book “Dermatology Training – The Essentials”.
